Security breaches in the news over the last few years have become common place, with a vast array of business types and size being attacked. Cyber hackers are becoming more sophisticated and advanced in the way they navigate past an organisation’s defences. For the large enterprise customer, the current fines for this are small and insignificant in comparison to their size and revenue stream. This allowed for a lot of organisations to take the risk of a breach rather than fully protecting their systems to an adequate standard, deterring these hackers from getting in. Not anymore!
GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)
The GDPR is a new European directive coming into force on May 25th 2018 and is set to change all this. The primary goal of GDPR is to harmonise and replace existing data protection regulations across the EU, and to ensure that organisations properly protect the personal information that they collect and store about EU citizens. The UK was a key contributor to defining the GDPR directive, and the ICO has recently confirmed that GDPR will still be applicable after Brexit. With fines that could amount to 4% of Global turnover or €20,000,000 organisations are having to take notice and fully make sure they are compliant before they receive a crippling fine.
